September is peak season. Large-scale festivals kick into gear across the country, and the options expand all at once — from scenic highland retreats to parties by the sea.
From harvest-season outdoor festivals to raves, here's a pick of what to experience right now, from Hokkaido all the way down to Miyazaki.
FOREST SOUND CAMP
A camp-style all-night rave hosted by Universal Music Box/UMB, a crew active in Tokyo's club scene. It was launched by members who grew up close to the forest and studied forestry, under the banner of "coexistence between forests and music." The setting is Ooba Camp Village in Hinode Town, Nishi-Tama, an area roughly 80% covered by forest. With hands-on experiences woven in, such as splitting firewood from Tama-grown timber, it's an experiment in forging a new relationship with the forest through music.

BIG FUN
An outdoor party produced by Precious Hall, Sapporo's long-standing institution. Held at an orchard on Sapporo's Mt. Hakkenzan, it puts world-class legends and top local artists on the same floor. A day to experience that singular sound philosophy taken outside the club.

Re:birth Festival
Launched in 2013, this outdoor festival flies the flag of Underground Music, Art & Technology. From Futtsu Cape and a quarry to total solar eclipse festivals in Korea and the United States, it has staged itself in a different environment each time, broadcasting Japan's own rave culture to the world. In 2026, returning after roughly two and a half years, it heads to Kodama no Mori in Kiso, Nagano. Over 80 acts gather, anchored in techno, house and trance.

COLORS Presents SOUNDCAMP
An outdoor rave held at Ishikari Bay New Port in Hokkaido. Taking advantage of the extended holiday, 2026 marks its first ever three-day edition. A defining feature is the deliberate pause in sound from late night into morning: by keeping everyone on a rhythm close to everyday life, the event nurtures a sense of unity on the floor. Fourteen artists, including four guests from outside Hokkaido, carry the crowd through two nights on a floor ringed by forest and grassland.

CIRCUS ODAIBA

御月民 -OTSUKIMI-
An outdoor festival that began in 2019 and now reaches its seventh year. True to its name, it takes place in step with the harvest moon. After moving between Hakuba Village in Nagano and Lake Kawaguchi in Yamanashi, it settled in 2025 at Healing Garden Takanami no Ike in Itoigawa, Niigata. On a grass floor encircled by the Northern Alps, 16 acts from Japan and abroad — including Efdemin, Anthony Linell and .VRIL — carry the event across three days, creating a space where music, nature and art intersect.

An outdoor festival held every autumn at Alps Park in Matsumoto, Nagano.
