As the autumn colours creep down from the peaks, the open-air season enters its final stretch. October is the densest month of the year. Labyrinth builds a three-day story in the forests of Gunma, Shizuoka's FRUE marks its tenth edition, and a 100-capacity Wonderfruit moves between temples and gardens in Kyoto. Long-running fixtures and free parties that refuse to disclose their location share the same month.
From Fukuoka to Kochi, Shizuoka and Nagano — eleven festivals and raves worth experiencing right now.
Synapse Festival

A community festival where music becomes the catalyst for connecting people, cultures and regions. For its third year, the event moves from Nokonoshima to INN THE PARK FUKUOKA inside Uminonakamichi Seaside Park, and runs across three days for the first time. Once the national park closes its gates, the grounds belong to the attendees alone, with sound running from morning through to daybreak. International guests including GE-OLOGY, Idjut Boys and Busan's PARK JUHEUM are joined by 40 acts drawn from across Japan and the Kyushu local scene. Sauna, public bath, yoga and workshops are all included in the pass.

EACH STORY

A listening festival held at Goko Ranch Auto Camp Ground on the Nobeyama Highlands, some 1,350 metres above sea level. Launched in 2019, it has grown by word of mouth rather than chasing scale. Grasslands and woodland looking out towards the Yatsugatake range, sound shimmering across the pond in front of the stage — the whole premise rests on deep listening. This year brings 25 acts from ten countries: Fennesz, Alice Phoebe Lou, Goldmund, Jim O'Rourke × Eiko Ishibashi, Tomo Katsurada × Jonny Nash, with DJ sets from Shhhhh, Masaaki Hara and YAMA aka sahib. A new instalment of "KANKYO DOT", the sound installation by dublab.jp and Yoshio Ojima, also premieres here.

Labyrinth

Mindgames' three-day open-air festival at Hodaigi Camping Ground in Minakami, Gunma. At roughly 1,000 metres, in forest overlooking Mt. Tanigawa, a Funktion-One system is assembled. Psychedelic techno, house, experimental and ambient form the backbone, and the festival's signature approach is to shape all three days as a single continuous story. This year features live performances from Donato Dozzy, Peter Van Hoesen, Reeko and Petar Dundov, alongside Kaito, So, Kagami Smile and Doltz. Advance tickets only — no door sales — and every ticket type includes three nights of camping.

TREKs

A Kansai-born open-air party that calls Daikokudani Camping Ground in Kuta, Kyoto its "point of origin". A forest campsite with a mountain stream running alongside it, ringed by cedar and cypress as well as natural beech woodland. Last year TREKs celebrated its 15th anniversary together with 20 years of RELATION GROOVE. Leave the city behind and let autumn arrive — camping and hammocks in the shade, walks at first light. BAR, DELI and SHOP vendors set up on site.
INTERGALACTIC

INTERGALACTIC returns to Ooba Camp Village in Hinode, Tokyo. This chapter is titled "PLANETFALL". Two stages rise in a field surrounded by tall trees, wooden bungalows and paths trailing off into the woods, with techno, breaks and psytrance at the core, expanding out into drum & bass, house and downtempo. Live performances, art installations, lasers and lighting design. Bungalow rentals are available, along with a limited number of camping sites.

Wonderfruit Chapters Kyoto

The first overseas edition from Wonderfruit, running for eleven years in Thailand. Capacity is capped at 100. There is no single site: the four days unfold on the move between Ohara Sanso, ACG Villa Kyoto, Mt. Kurama, Ochill TeaRoom and other locations around Kyoto. At its centre sits the Japanese concept of myō, framed here as a stance for finding the extraordinary quietly residing within the everyday. The four days are divided into four movements — Arrival, Attunement, Encounter and Realization — and the line-up is never announced. What's offered up front is not who will play, but how you'll spend the time.
SAWAGI FESTIVAL

Having passed the ten-year milestone last year, this open-air festival now enters its eleventh edition. The setting shifts from Hakushu in Yamanashi to Suteki Village Camping, ringed by the mountains of Gunma, unfolding across three days of music, nature and camping on two stages. COMPUMA, DJ SODEYAMA, DJ KENSEI, REE.K, Kojiro, OCCA, YSK, SUNGA and Riyo Sanmyaku are among the names holding up the domestic underground. The core of it is the story — ambient, techno and house meticulously constructed over three days.

PARALLEL WORLD

An outdoor free party that yamamotech has been running since 2012. The location is never disclosed — only "somewhere in Japan". Entry is free, and the operation is sustained by donations and crowdfunding. The desire to experience something outside the everyday, in a phantom space that appears out of nowhere and then vanishes: that impulse is where it began, a pure obsession with DJs and sound systems given physical form.
FESTIVAL de FRUE

Built on the promise of "music that makes the soul tremble", the festival held at TSUMAGOI RESORT SAINO SATO in Kakegawa, Shizuoka since 2017 reaches its tenth edition. Morocco's The Master Musicians of Joujouka, Acid Pauli, Juana Molina, Sylvan Esso, Sam Gendel, Shintaro Sakamoto, Akuma no Numa. Twenty-three acts spanning genres and borders line up across two days in the open air. It's the culmination of a decade woven not from the dance music side, but from experimental and world music.
