Outdoor season is heading into its final stretch.

November brings a chill, and with it a thinner event calendar — yet the range of places only widens: campgrounds in the woods, streets in front of the station, a factory, under a bridge, and even a beach in Okinawa. GROW THE CULTURE, billing itself as Tokyo's only bass music festival; MUTEK.JP, relocating to Takanawa Gateway City; and SOUL BEAT ASIA, the world music festival that carries on beneath a bridge in Toyota. Urban festivals and local raves across the country line up in the same month.

From Tokyo to Aichi, Nagano, Miyakojima and Ishigaki — nine events to experience in November, as autumn turns to winter.

GROW THE CULTURE OPEN AIR

The fourth outdoor chapter from GROW THE CULTURE, the label and collective launched in Tokyo in 2021. Billed as "Tokyo's only bass music festival," it builds on UK sound system culture with 20 hours of genre-crossing low end echoing through Ohba Camping Village in Hinode. Sound comes courtesy of a VOID Acoustics rig tuned specifically for GTC. This year welcomes Fracture and Neffa-T from the UK, alongside 17 acts including akii, Dayzero, Dx, okadada, Stones Taro, Submerse and Velocity. Bungalows and campsites let you stay through until morning. Nights get cold — hand warmers are handed out at the entrance.

SANGENJAYA ART MUSIC FESTIVAL

Under the banner "the streets of Sangenjaya connected by music," this urban festival turns the neighbourhood itself into a circuit, running from midday through to the next morning. Daytime centres on the NTT East Setagaya Building parking lot, with live sets, DJs, food and a market spread across four official venues; from 18:00 it shifts into "OPEN TOWN TIME," where you roam the area's bars and restaurants at will. After 20:00, four night venues including FRIENDS bar&lounge and Tengu Shokudo carry hip hop, house, disco, soul, jazz and funk through to dawn. Around 70 acts, among them JESSE, DABO, Yamaarashi, RUEED, BARK and OSAMU M. Admission is free, and ordering the official drink "Sancha HIGH" earns you a sticker at each venue.

SOUL BEAT ASIA

The "Under the Bridge World Music Festival," staged once again at Sengoku Park, sprawling beneath Toyota Ohashi Bridge in Toyota, Aichi. Resonance

An event hosted by DJ and artist Lisa Mizuno where electronic music, art and wellness intersect. The name refers to the process by which stimuli from outside resonate within us and give rise to new sensations. After five editions in Tokyo, it moved last year to Oizumi Factory in Kawaguchi, Saitama. The roughly 10,000㎡ site holds two floors: the industrial indoor WAREHOUSE and the GARDEN, where sound dissolves into its surroundings. Melbourne's LOIF, Berlin-based PERYL, "African Acid is the Future" head Maryama Luiccioni, Fried Banana Shop and SAKURA TSURUTA line up, alongside workshops in yoga, tea ceremony, meditation and running. Attendees are asked to bring their own cups and tableware.

Cabaret Recordings

The party from Cabaret Recordings — the label founded by So Inagawa and dj masda in 2013 — heads to Miyakojima. The venue is Mipama Es Su Casa, facing Yonaha Maehama Beach. The sound of a label built on a catalogue rooted in minimal rings out for one night on a Miyakojima beach in late November.

TAKARAJIMA

A beach-cleaning party held somewhere on Ishigaki Island. The location isn't disclosed — only "Somewhere In Ishigaki." Clean the beach, then dance on the same stretch of sand. Two days set against the Yaeyama sea at the end of November. [Organizer, concept and lineup to be added manually]

From a street festival roaming the area around the station to a world music festival under a bridge and beaches on Miyakojima and Ishigaki, November is the month with the widest spread of venues. Outdoors, the night-time cold sets in for real. Prepare for the chill — and check each event page early for ticket movement.
